Scanning in the app

Scan an asset tag or serial number with AssetCenter for iPhone and iPad to open the asset, or create it on the spot when the code isn't in AssetCenter yet.

Last updated

Scanning is the quickest way to open an asset when you are standing in front of it. Point the camera at its tag and the app opens the record, with no typing.

Where to find it

The Scan barcode button is the barcode icon in the top left corner of Home, the Assets, Subscriptions, People and Locations lists, To-dos, Search, GPS Tracking and the Assistant. Record pages don't have it; go back to a list or to Home to scan.

The first time you scan, iOS asks whether AssetCenter can use the camera. If you said no, the app shows Camera access is required to scan assets. Turn the camera back on for AssetCenter in your iPhone's Settings app.

Scanning a tag

Tap Scan barcode and point the camera at the code. The app reads QR codes and the common barcode formats: Code 128, Code 39, EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and UPC-E.

The scanned value is matched against the asset tag and the serial number of every asset you can see, so a manufacturer's serial number label works as well as a tag you printed yourself. When it matches, the asset opens straight away.

Scanning finds assets only. Subscriptions, people and locations are found with Search.

When nothing matches

If no asset has that tag or serial number, the app shows Asset not found and asks Would you like to create it?

  • Create opens New Asset with the scanned code already in the Asset Tag field. Fill in the rest and save. See adding records in the app.
  • Cancel goes back, so you can check the tag or search for the asset another way.

That makes receiving new equipment quick: unbox it, scan its barcode, and the record starts with its real tag rather than one typed in later.

If the camera saw a code but couldn't read anything from it, the app shows No barcode data was detected. Please try again. Hold the phone steady, move a little closer, and make sure the label is lit.

Labels to scan

If your assets don't have labels yet, the free asset tag generator prints numbered QR codes or barcodes on standard label sheets or a label printer, and every label it makes scans straight into the app.

Scanning works the same way in AssetCenter on the web; see barcode scanning.
