Why teams look for Snipe-IT alternatives

Snipe-IT is one of the most widely used IT asset trackers for good reason. It is open source, the self-hosted edition is free, and it handles the core IT job well: hardware, software licenses, accessories, consumables, users, and check-in and check-out.

Teams usually start looking elsewhere for one of five reasons:

• Someone has to run the server. The free edition means your team owns the web server, database, upgrades, backups, mail delivery, and security patches. That cost does not appear on an invoice, but it is real.
• Records arrive by hand. Snipe-IT is a system of record, not a discovery tool. Devices are entered, imported, or pushed through the API, so keeping it current depends on process and scripts.
• The scope has grown past IT. Vehicles, tools, AV kits, and facilities equipment can be forced into an IT asset model, but operations teams often find the fit awkward.
• Subscriptions live somewhere else. Snipe-IT tracks software licenses, but recurring SaaS subscriptions, renewals, and their costs usually end up in a separate spreadsheet.

First, check whether you need to leave at all

If the only problem is running the server, Snipe-IT's own hosting may be the simplest fix. Its Basic hosted plan is $39.99 a month or $399.99 a year, and Small Business hosting, which adds TLS, automatic backups, and priority feature requests, is $99.99 a month or $999.99 a year. Both include unlimited users and assets. You keep the product your team already knows and hand the maintenance to the people who build it.

For IT teams, the Apple Business integration brings in Macs, iPhones, and iPads with their serial numbers, orders, and AppleCare coverage, and the Microsoft Entra ID sync keeps people records current from directory groups. Laptops, vehicles, tools, and furniture all live in the same system.

Where Snipe-IT is stronger

2. Reftab

Reftab is an IT asset management platform that leans on integrations. Its Hardware Asset Management plan lists integrations with Intune, Jamf, Jira, and more than 30 others, along with barcode and QR scanning, a mobile app, asset audits, maintenance tracking, and hardware lifecycle tracking.

Its pricing has become simpler: a free plan for up to 50 assets, a Hardware Asset Management plan at $125 a month with unlimited assets, a Software Asset Management plan at $9 per tracked software user per year, and a custom-priced Complete ITAM plan that combines both. Paid plans include a 14-day trial.

Where Reftab beats Snipe-IT

• Records that stay current: MDM and tool integrations keep device data flowing in, rather than relying on manual entry and imports.
• SaaS discovery: the Software Asset Management plan adds SaaS application discovery, usage monitoring, and access reviews.
• A real free tier: 50 assets free, hosted, with check-out and check-in and mobile apps.

3. AssetSonar

AssetSonar is EZO's IT asset management product, built around discovery. Its ITAM plan covers IT asset discovery and tracking with agent-based discovery, network discovery, and MDM integrations, plus on-premises software listing, check-in and check-out, a mobile app, reporting, integrations, and workflow automations.

Pricing is per asset: the ITAM plan starts at $0.75 per asset per month, and the ITSM plan, which adds request, incident, problem, and change management, starts at $1.08 per asset per month. Volume discounts apply above 1,000 assets, and an Advanced SAM add-on costs $5 per asset per year.

Where AssetSonar beats Snipe-IT

• Discovery built in: agents, network scans, and MDM integrations find devices instead of waiting for someone to enter them.
• A path to a service desk: teams that want tickets and change management tied to assets can move to the ITSM plan.
• Deeper software management: the SAM add-on handles license allocation, compliance, and reclamation.

Watch for: per-asset pricing grows with the fleet. At 500 assets the ITAM plan's starting rate is about $375 a month, several times Snipe-IT's hosted plans.

4. GLPI

GLPI is the closest like-for-like swap for teams that chose Snipe-IT because it is open source. It is licensed under the GPL-3.0 and covers IT asset management, an ITIL service desk, license tracking, and software auditing, so it replaces both an asset tracker and a basic helpdesk.

Self-hosting is free. For hosted GLPI, the publisher Teclib' sells GLPI Network Cloud from €19 per user per month on shared infrastructure, or €21 per user per month on a private server with a 25-user minimum, excluding VAT. Self-hosted teams can buy professional support subscriptions from €100 a month.

Where GLPI beats Snipe-IT

• Assets and tickets together: the helpdesk and CMDB share one system, so incidents link to the devices they concern.
• Still open source: you keep self-hosting and code-level control if that is why you chose Snipe-IT.
• Broader IT scope: budget and financial management and data center management come with the platform.

Watch for: GLPI is a bigger system than Snipe-IT. More modules mean more to configure, and the self-hosting burden you may be trying to escape is still there unless you pay for the cloud edition.

5. AssetTiger

AssetTiger is hosted asset tracking at a low, published price. Plans are sized by asset count: $20 a month for 500 assets, $40 for 2,500, $75 for 10,000, $140 for 50,000, and $275 for 250,000, with annual billing worth one free month. Every paid plan includes unlimited users, the REST API, and all features.

Where AssetTiger beats Snipe-IT

• Hosted for less: at $20 a month for 500 assets, it undercuts Snipe-IT's Basic hosting without running your own server.
• General-purpose assets: it is not IT-specific, so tools, vehicles, and furniture fit naturally.

6. Asset Panda

Asset Panda is a commercial platform built for configuration: fields, workflows, reports, and permissions shaped around each department's process, with mobile apps that scan barcodes and work offline. Its own cost guide describes user-based pricing starting at $3,000 a year for Starter and $7,500 a year for Business+, with the final price set by quote.

• Assets beyond IT, subscriptions, and a clear history for every item: AssetCenter.
• The lowest hosted price with unlimited users: AssetTiger.
